The Estonian Institute in Hungary, in co-operation with Budapest Music Centre, started a film club in 2015, which brings a selection of films featuring Arvo Pärt’s music to Hungarian music and film enthusiasts.

Director Gus Van Sant’s drama “Gerry” will be shown at the next screening of the series.

The year 2015 saw the celebration of Arvo Pärt’s 80th birthday. The works of the world-famous composer hailing from Estonia cannot only be heard on albums and in concert halls, but often also in cinema, as his music has inspired several film directors like Jean-Luc Godard, Tom Tykwer and Bernardo Bertolucci.

The series of film evenings organised by Estonian Institute, inspired by the events held by Arvo Pärt Centre for five years already, present feature films and documentaries that use Arvo Pärt’s music. The films are screened in the library of Budapest Music Centre in the original language with Hungarian subtitles.

The screening will be preceded by an introduction by playwright, writer, journalist and screenwriter László Kolozsi.

“Gerry”

Director: Gus Van Sant
2002, USA, 103 minutes

Two boys in late teens (Matt Damon, Casey Affleck), both named Gerry, embark upon a nature hike in the desert. Coming from the generation of TV and computer games, they obviously face wildlife for the first time in their lives as they have no water or food, not to mention a mobile phone, compass, or sunscreen. Adventurous and presumptuous, they digress from the marked trail and get lost. For a while, however, their confidence is not shaken by anything, but the hours on the road turn to days, their memory fails trying to recall paths already taken, their strength runs out, and the two “crowns of nature” must give in to the Nature. Finding the way back to the civilisation demands a sacrifice, the essence and meaning of which is not easy to understand.

The film’s soundtrack features Arvo Pärt’s works “Spiegel im Spiegel” and “Für Alina”.
